Wall Paint

The Wall Paint task allows students to demonstrate their ability to measure area. Students will be told the amount of paint needed to paint a wall and will be asked to calculate the amount of paint needed to calculate a wall with doubled dimensions. Students will complete this task working independently. The resource required for this task is an answer booklet.

This task is a part of the Measurement task series from 2009. This task is classified as a trend task by NEMP. Trend tasks are used to examine trends in student performance: whether they have improved, stayed constant or declined over the four-year period since the previous assessments.

Washington Crosses Delaware

This task measures students’ ability to source a document.  When historians interpret a document, they first look to find out who wrote it and when.  This information presents important clues about whether the source provides reliable evidence about the past.  This assessment gauges whether students understand an important aspect of sourcing: the time elapsed between when a document was produced, and the event that it depicts.  Students who understand the importance of when a document was produced will see that the painting shown in this task is of little use to historians who wish to understand the Battle of Trenton, because it was produced 100 years after the event.

The Wasp task gives students practice asking scientific questions.  Students will watch a video on wasps and then think about good questions they could ask a scientist to investigate. This task includes two follow up questions. Resources required for this task include a video on wasps and a device to watch it on.

The Water task allows students to demonstrate their ability to use book covers to identify an appropriate book, find the appropriate page numbers using the indexes, and use the tables of content to identify which chapters to look in. Students will complete this task working one on one with a teacher-administrator. The resources required for this task are book covers, tables of contents and indexes for three books, and a card listing questions.
