How Much Could It Hold?

The How Much Could It Hold? task allows students to demonstrate their ability to estimate capacity using typical household items. Students will complete this task working in stations. The resources required for this task are four containers (milk bottle, yogurt pottle, juice packet, medicine container) and an answer booklet.

This task is a part of the Measurement task series from 2009. This task is classified as a trend task by NEMP. Trend tasks are used to examine trends in student performance: whether they have improved, stayed constant or declined over the four-year period since the previous assessments.

Jars and Marbles

The Jars and Marbles task allows students to demonstrate their measurement sense and their ability to estimate measuring capacity. Students will be given a container of marbles and will estimate to where the marbles would fill other jars of varying shapes and sizes. Then they will estimate how many film canisters they would need to contain all the marbles. Students will complete this task working in stations. The resources required for this task are a jar filled with marbles, a film canister, three jars, and an answer booklet.
