Bottles

The Bottles task allows students to demonstrate their ability to estimate, compare, and problem solve. Students will estimate how much water various bottles can hold and determine how they could measure an amount water using bottles that hold different amounts. Students will complete this task working one on one with a teacher-administrator. The resources required for this task are four bottles, colored tape, two cards, and a layout page.

Boxes in Boxes

In the Boxes in Boxes task, students will determine how many small boxes of various items will fit in a bigger box.  Students will complete this task working in stations. The resources required for this task are an open rectangular box, three boxes of raisins, two packets of Fruit Bursts, five Minties (cubes), a ruler, and a calculator.

Broken Ruler

The Broken Ruler task allows students to demonstrate their ability to measure length. Students will measure objects using a piece of a ruler that does not start at zero. Students will complete this task working one on one with a teacher-administrator.  The resources required for this task are a"broken” ruler, a 40cm length of ribbon, a piece of colored card, and a recording book.

The Burger Lunch task allows students to demonstrate their money sense. Students will select which items from a menu that they would order, calculate the total cost, and calculate how much change they would get back,  Students will complete this task working in stations. Calculating Order

The Calculating Order task allows students to demonstrate their ability to put numbers into ascending order. In this task students will be given six pictures of calculators showing different answers and will arranging these in order from smallest to largest answer. Students will complete this task working one on one with a teacher-administrator. The resources required for this task are six pictures or red calculators, six pictures of blue calculators, and a recording book.

This task is a part of the Number task series from 2001. This task is classified as a trend task by NEMP. Trend tasks are used to examine trends in student performance: whether they have improved, stayed constant or declined over the four-year period since the previous assessments.

Calculator Changes

The Calculator Changes task allows students to demonstrate their understanding of operations and their ability to add, subtract, divide, and multiply. Students will complete this task working in stations. The resources required for this task are a Macintosh Powerbook 5300cs laptop computer with specially written Hypercard® program, a cue card for using the program, and a prompt card containing initial instructions.
