Help me Peel

The Help me Peel task allows students to demonstrate their ability to design a potato peeler for a person with a physical disability. Students will complete this task working in stations. The resources required for this task are a photograph, an instruction card, and a recording sheet.

Hip Hop On The Spot

The Hip Hop On The Spot task aims to unite young people from different countries by means of a collaborative musical and literary creation through hip hop, a street culture in which young people are the protagonists. The project begins with a theme for youngsters to write one RAP, speaking of iEARN, youth and collaborative creation. Lyrics should have 8 metric syllables.  The rhyme should be posted to the project forum and the project facilitator will then organize completed lyrics for the full song and re-post to the forum.

In the News

The In the News unit includes an introduction, the learning focus, 7 teaching and learning activities, assessment criteria, and resources.

Unit description from source: In In the news students undertake a research activity on an issue in the local community and report to the class using a multimedia slide-show presentation. Students develop an action plan to address the issue and write an article which could be published appropriately.

Students use multimedia software to compose, record and revise their report. Students identify photographs and sound to use in their slide shows and enhance the presentation. During the research they use strategies such as brainstorming, planning, questioning, note making, action planning, composing and revising, and they refine their editing skills through improving their own texts. Students learn how context, purpose and audience shape and influence written texts. They set personal goals and evaluate their own learning and social interactions throughout the unit.

Jar Opener

The Jar Opener task allows students to demonstrate their ability to investigate and evaluate design. Students will be given a jar and jar opener and asked to will answer questions about them. Students will complete this task working one on one with a teacher-administrator. The resources required for this task are a jar opener and a jar with a lid.

This task is a part of the Technological Capabilities task series from 2004. This task is classified as a trend task by NEMP. Trend tasks are used to examine trends in student performance: whether they have improved, stayed constant or declined over the four-year period since the previous assessments.

Light the Lights

The Light the Lights task allows students to demonstrate their ability to connect electrical circuits. Students will make a switch board work so that the switches light up a light bulb in three different ways. Students will complete this task working one on one with a teacher-administrator. The resources required for this task are a board with two switches, a battery, a bulb, and six wires with alligator clips.

This task is a part of the Technological Capabilities task series from 2000. This task is classified as a trend task by NEMP. Trend tasks are used to examine trends in student performance: whether they have improved, stayed constant or declined over the four-year period since the previous assessments.

The resources required for this task are a Macintosh Powerbook 5300CS laptop computer with program Hypercard® Player, headphones, a mouse, and the Hypercard® document Mac Moves.

Unit description from source: In Multiplication Patterns students focus on recognising patterns in sequences of numbers and using them to make predictions about further numbers in the sequence. The assessment task requires them to use spreadsheets to analyse sequences, and make and test predictions.

My Hero Project

In the My Hero Project task, students will use MY HERO, an interdisciplinary, online, interactive Web site that celebrates the best of humanity through essays, artwork, audio, drama, and short films. Students will publish essays and submit multimedia online about their heroes. The project seeks to promote cultural awareness, activism and understanding through global storytelling that honors the heroes in our families, the community and the world.

Newspaper Report

The Newspaper Report unit includes an introduction, the learning focus, 4 teaching and learning activities, assessment criteria, and resources.

Unit description from source: In Newspaper Report students identify characteristics of text style that can be used to describe the differences between newspapers and then collect summary statistics from a range of newspapers. They analyze these statistics and produce a report based on their findings. Working within teams, students provide constructive feedback on each others' work and analyze different points of view.
