Flag Change

The Flag Change task allows students to demonstrate their understanding of changing images of cultural identity. Students will complete this task working one on one with a teacher-administrator. The resources required for this task are a New Zealand Flag and a picture.

This task is a part of the Identity, Culture, Heritage task series from 2009. This task is classified as a trend task by NEMP. Trend tasks are used to examine trends in student performance: whether they have improved, stayed constant or declined over the four-year period since the previous assessments.

The Flags task allows students to demonstrate their understanding of symbols associated with a national identity. Students will complete this task working one on one with a teacher-administrator. The resources required for this task are two pictures and a recording book.

Folk Costumes Around the Globe

The Folk Costumes Around the Globe task is meant to give the students from as many countries as possible, a chance to share their folk/national costumes with other students and teachers in the world, to promote their folk art and traditions. The students will provide pictures of folk costumes from their countries together with a short description of them, and give information about the occasions on which people use/used to wear them.

Future Citizen Project

The Future Citizen Project task focuses on rights and duties of the citizen, tolerance and freedom, civic responsibilities and engagement. Students will research laws, elections, and governmental systems in their own country as well as complete a service learning project such as a voter registration drive, volunteering for a candidate, volunteering at the polls, or writing letters to government officials about important community issues. Students will monitor the international press for reports on human rights and election results. Students will create a documentary of their work in a photo journal, video tape, or multimedia presentation.

Gardner's Civil War Photography

This task assesses students’ ability to source, contextualize, and corroborate a primary source from the Civil War era.  Students are asked to consider how the content of two photographs by famous Civil War photographer Alexander Gardner could affect their reliability. Then, students must think of other information they would like to know about the circumstances surrounding the photographs in order to further evaluate their reliability.

Resources available for this task include downloadable PDF versions of both the assessment as well as the Rubric with benchmark descriptors.

Girls Rising Project

In the Girls Rising Project task, students will  watch "Girl Rising" (or excerpted chapters at: Nepal Chapter http://youtu.be/Hk2Q7WLzn0sand Peru Chapter http://youtu.be/7P6nL7PXILw if the full DVD is not available) and, then share their reflections. Students are encouraged to share ideas about what they can do to make the situation of girls in the world and in their own country better.
