Salt Solutions

The Salt Solutions task allows students to perform a fair test experiment to determine which of two types of salt dissolves faster. Students will complete this task working one on one with a teacher-administrator. Resources required for this task include two beakers, table salt;,rock salt, one teaspoon, two stirrers, water in a jug, a clock, a laminated results sheet, and an erasable felt pen.

Sand

The Sand task allows students to learn about geology by examining three different types of sand. Students will complete this task working one on one with a teacher-administrator.  Resources required for this task include three sand samples and a hand lens.

Trend tasks are used to examine trends in student performance: whether they have improved, stayed constant or declined over the four-year period since the previous assessments.

The School Garden task allows students to investigate the requirements for a successful garden. Students will look at a picture of a school garden and answer six follow up questions. Students will complete this task working one on one with a teacher-administrator. Resources required for this task include a picture of a school garden.

Scooter

The Scooter task allows students to investigate motion and the resistance to motion. Students will watch a short video of a person riding a scooter on different surfaces and answer five questions. Students will complete this task working one on one with a teacher-administrator.  Resources required for this task include a video recording and a device to play it on.

Seed to Pine

The Seed to Pine task allows students to account for the growth of a pine tree of immense size and weight from a small seed. Students will complete this task working one on one with a teacher-administrator. Resources required for this task include a picture of a pine tree, a pine tree seed, and a pine cone.

Shining Light

The Shining Light task allows students to investigate electricity by making a flashlight bulb shine by connecting the bulb to wires and a battery. Students will answer five questions. Students will complete this task working one on one with a teacher-administrator.  Resources required for this task include a flashlight bulb, a battery (cell) in holder, and red and green wires with alligator clips.

The Slides Away task allows students to investigate the friction of three different material though a hands-on experience. After examining how different materials slide on a wooden board, students will answer five follow up questions. Students will complete this task working one on one with a teacher-administrator. Resources required for this task include a wooden board, a long rubber band, and a wooden block.

Sorting

The Sorting task focuses on classification. In this task students will think about why the objects in each bag have been grouped together and will answer ten questions. Students will complete this task working one on one with a teacher-administrator. Resources required for this task are three bags, a nail, a balloon, a coin (bag 1: rubber band, plasticine, foam cube; bag 2: metal spoon, magnet, metal paper ring; bag 3: stone, wooden cube, plastic counter)

Sound Chimes

The Sound Chimes task allows students to think about and experiment with the high and low notes. Students will answer seven questions. Students will complete this task working in stations.  ​ Resources required for this task include bolt chimes (four bolts of different sizes, suspended on a string from a wire frame mounted on a wooden base, bolts decreasing in size from bolt A to bolt D) and a large nail to use as a striker.

This task is a part of the Physical World task series from 1995 by NEMP.
