Bug Graphs

The Bug Graphs task allows students to demonstrate their ability to construct a graph. Students will complete this task working in stations. The resources required for this task are a circle to start graph in recording book, three butterflies, a ruler, five spiders, and two caterpillars.

This task is a part of the Construction or Completing Graphs, Tables, and Maps task series from 2003. This task is classified as a trend task by NEMP. Trend tasks are used to examine trends in student performance: whether they have improved, stayed constant or declined over the four-year period since the previous assessments.

Bug Sort

The Bug Sort task focuses on the classification of bugs.  In this task students will sort sixteen pictures of bugs into four groups by their similar features. Students must give each group a name and describe three features that are special to the bugs in each group. Students will complete this task working teams. Resources required for this task are two sets of sixteen pictures, two instruction cards, and an answer sheet.

This task is a part of the Living World task series from 2003. This task is classified as a trend task by NEMP. Trend tasks are used to examine trends in student performance: whether they have improved, stayed constant or declined over the four-year period since the previous assessments.

Burger Lunch

The Burger Lunch task allows students to demonstrate their money sense. Students will select which items from a menu that they would order, calculate the total cost, and calculate how much change they would get back,  Students will complete this task working in stations. The resource required for this task is a menu card.

Bush

The Bush task allows students to look at a picture of the bush and think about how plants and animals live together in the bush and why plants are important to people.  Students can click on different parts of the bush picture to see some of the animals and plants. This task includes three follow up questions. Students will complete this task working one on one with a teacher-administrator. Resources required for this task include a computer program on a laptop computer.

Buzzer

The Buzzer task allows students to demonstrate their ability to use an electrical circuit for a particular purpose. Students will complete this task working one on one with a teacher-administrator. The resources required for this task are a floor plan of house, a red pencil, a battery, four wires with crocodile clips, a switch, and a buzzer.

Calculating Order

The Calculating Order task allows students to demonstrate their ability to put numbers into ascending order. In this task students will be given six pictures of calculators showing different answers and will arranging these in order from smallest to largest answer. Students will complete this task working one on one with a teacher-administrator. The resources required for this task are six pictures or red calculators, six pictures of blue calculators, and a recording book.

The Calculator Changes task allows students to demonstrate their understanding of operations and their ability to add, subtract, divide, and multiply. Students will complete this task working in stations. The resources required for this task are a Macintosh Powerbook 5300cs laptop computer with specially written Hypercard® program, a cue card for using the program, and a prompt card containing initial instructions.
