Jar Opener

The Jar Opener task allows students to demonstrate their ability to investigate and evaluate design. Students will be given a jar and jar opener and asked to will answer questions about them. Students will complete this task working one on one with a teacher-administrator. The resources required for this task are a jar opener and a jar with a lid.

This task is a part of the Technological Capabilities task series from 2004. This task is classified as a trend task by NEMP. Trend tasks are used to examine trends in student performance: whether they have improved, stayed constant or declined over the four-year period since the previous assessments.

Jars and Marbles

The Jars and Marbles task allows students to demonstrate their measurement sense and their ability to estimate measuring capacity. Students will be given a container of marbles and will estimate to where the marbles would fill other jars of varying shapes and sizes. Then they will estimate how many film canisters they would need to contain all the marbles. Students will complete this task working in stations. The resources required for this task are a jar filled with marbles, a film canister, three jars, and an answer booklet.

This task is a part of the Measurement task series from 2009. This task is classified as a trend task by NEMP. Trend tasks are used to examine trends in student performance: whether they have improved, stayed constant or declined over the four-year period since the previous assessments.

The Jazzy Cats task allows students to demonstrate their ability to play melodic parts. Students will complete this task working in groups. The resources required for this task are a video on a laptop computer, four beaters, four music cards, two chime bar sets, four team badges, and a Working Together team card.

The Jelly task allows students to demonstrate their ability to measure and calculate lengths and volumes. Students will complete this task working in stations. Students will measure the dimensions of a jello box and calculate the volume. Then they will apply their findings to determine the dimensions and volume of a crate of ten jello boxes. The resources required for this task are a jello box, a ruler, a calculator, and an answer booklet.

The Jelly Crystals task allows students to design a fair test experiment on the dissolving 
rates of jelly crystals. Students will complete this task working in teams and answer seven questions. Resources required for this task include jelly crystals, a jug of hot water, a jug of cold water, two plastic glasses, two teaspoons, a recording sheet, and a stopwatch.

Students will complete this task in open space. The resources required for this task are 3.5m long rope ladder, a large ball, a small ball, and a small bat.
