Lynching Controversy

This task assesses students’ ability to reason how evidence supports a historical argument. Students must explain how an anti-lynching pamphlet written by activist Ida B. Wells, and an excerpt from the front page of a Florida newspaper article justifying lynching, both support the conclusion that many Americans opposed the practice.

Resources include PDF downloads of the assessment with source materials, and a rubric with benchmark descriptors.

Machinto

In the Machinto task, students will read the book “Machinto” and others related to Hiroshima/Nagasaki. They will learn about what wars bring us and research where little birds ”war affected children” are still crying somewhere in the world today. They will make creative picture books and videos about peace and friendship to share with those little birds in the world.

Math Club Mystery

In Math Club Mystery students are asked to find out how many students, teachers and parents went on a trip to the movies. The key concept is to set up equations that represent the given information and use those equations to determine, from the given information the possible combinations of students, teachers and parents that were on the trip.

This task includes:

The Mathematics Questions includes three sections. Section 1 contains 26 item from 2012 assessment. Section 2 contains 30 items designed for, but not used in, the 2012 assessment. Section 3 contains 11 items that were used in the 2003 and 2006 assessments. The assessments focuses on students' abilities to use their knowledge and skills to meet real-life challenges, rather than merely on the extent to which they have mastered a specific school curriculum.
